Cyclepath Oakville Race Team had two
teams in the 2 person relay combined age 70 and over category, Jeff Shikaze & Brent Fargo, and Greg Andre-Barrett & Chris Blacklock.
Of course at 56 I almost qualify for this category
without a partner. Barry Cox, member of our Oakville-Toronto cycling commuters, was in the Solo Single Speed category.

The forecast was hot and wet. Someone at the race told me the temperature was 30 degrees and the equivalent of 40 with the humidity. After every lap I was drenched in sweat and had to wring
my headband and
gloves out. Due to the heat and extra sweating I suffered some leg
cramps on one
lap, which I fixed by adding more e-load and e-cap
electrolytes to my drink for the other laps. Jeff rides without gloves and with the sweating was finding it difficult to hold onto his handle bar grips.
However, we were very fortunate that it didn’t rain (just a few sprinkles), so the approximate 10km
course was tacky and fast, besides a few slippery rocks and roots sections. >
Jeff had a bad head cold, but this didn’t slow him
down, as he and Brent powered to 2nd place with 16 laps and
a 30:54
average lap time.
Unfortunately for me and Chris, Chris lost some time on an early lap when he punctured his tire
by running into another rider’s bike, because they suddenly stopped when going through a rocky section. His CO2 didn’t work but luckily he also had a
hand-pump. Chris and I ended up 9th with 14 laps and a 35:56 average lap time.
Barry Cox on his Misfit single speed rigid finished 7th
with 9 laps and a 51:13 average lap time.
After the race we re-hydrated with some well earned cold beer! On the way home we stopped and re-fueled with
some great
burritos.
